Travel Adapter Guide for South Africans: Which Plug Do I Need?
Share
South Africa's chunky three-pin plug doesn't fit sockets in most other countries. Before you fly, make sure you've packed the right universal travel adapter so you can charge your phone the moment you land.
Which plug does each country use?
- United Kingdom and Ireland: Type G (three rectangular pins)
- Most of Europe: Type C and F (two round pins)
- USA and Canada: Type A and B (two flat pins)
- Australia and New Zealand: Type I (two angled flat pins)
- Dubai and the UAE: mostly Type G, like the UK
Visiting more than one country, or not sure? A universal adapter covers all of these in one unit.
Do I need a voltage converter?
Usually not for electronics. South Africa runs on 230V. Most phone chargers, laptop chargers and power banks are rated 100–240V, so they work anywhere with just a plug adapter. Check the small print on your charger. Hair dryers and straighteners are different: many are 230V only and shouldn't be used on 120V in the US.
Why get an adapter with USB ports?
An adapter with built-in USB and Type-C ports charges your phone, earbuds and watch without packing separate chargers. That frees up the hotel socket for your laptop.
